Vacancy for Director of Music for Pro Musica Chamber Choir

Pro Musica, a successful and well-established chamber choir currently based in Lewes and Alfriston, is seeking to appoint a new director of music from September 2019.

The choir has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with its retiring MD, and is committed to continuing the musical development he has inspired for many years. The choir of about 40 experienced singers has a friendly and inclusive ethos.

On application members have a voice hearing, and all share a desire to bring the very best of their abilities to creating excellence in their performances of choral music, and are attentive and responsive to the Musical Director.

The choir is accustomed to working with a wide range of classical and contemporary music and prepares for three concerts each year. Rehearsals are held in Lewes during school term times, on Monday evenings from 7.30 to 9.30.

The Musical Director works with a members’ committee who are dedicated to maintaining a thriving and evolving choir and are responsible for membership records, finance, publicity, performance venues, and ticket sales among other administrative roles.

Responsibilities and Job Description for the Musical Director
To direct and conduct rehearsals
To conduct concerts and performances
To ensure that good choral practice and singing technique are core to rehearsals
To select music for each season in collaboration with the committee
To assist the committee in selecting and engaging soloists and instrumentalists for concerts
To attend committee meetings as an ex officio member
To attend and report to the AGM of the choir

Essential Qualities and Person Specification for the Musical Director
Proven ability to conduct choral groups and orchestras with expressive direction
Ability to energise the choir with passion and enthusiasm
Ability to communicate encouragement and a positive musical environment
Ability to work with and value the variety of skills among members
Willingness to work collaboratively with the committee on all choir business and a shared vision for the choir.

The role of Musical Director is remunerated. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview during April and May, and to conduct the choir for a short period during a Monday evening rehearsal, as part of the interview process.
